BUNKER PROJECT TERNESSE GOLF CLUB, BELGIUM

The bunker project was based on a project where we were partners at The Dutch on the complete bunker renovation for the KLM Dutch Open.

Niall Richardson the course manager had engaged 4 of our staff to help with the renovation and based on his design and trials we embarked on the project at Ternesse Golf Club.

After discussions with the club management team of Piet and Leo they decided that 44 bunkers should be fully renovated with shaping and drainage.

Ternesse is a beautiful parkland course in Wommelgem close to Antwerp but has its issues with high water table so good draining bunkers were imperative.

Piets and Leos vision was that the bunkers should be more visible and more playable.

We were already working on the system designed by Niall so I thought this would work well in Ternesse and ask Piet and Leo to go for a visit.

It was then agreed to proceed with the project which would take around 40 days to complete.

We had to remove all sand from the bunker as the new system required 2 different types of sand with the base layer 15cm with the darainage and then compacted.

This layer is designed to drain at only 60mm per hour and draws the water into the drainage pipes.

The second layer is also 15 cm and the compacted again before final finishing and this layer drains at 350mm per hour.

The bunker faces are left compacted as when ball enters bunker it then rolls down into the middle and becomes playable for all standards of golfer.

We completed the project on time with the Management and the members very happy with the final results.
